“Liam Rosenior: The Exceptional Coach Wayne Rooney Cherishes, Deserving a Bold Chance as Chelsea Manager”(January 5, 2026)

Liam Rosenior was Wayne Rooney’s Derby County assistant manager.

The former England striker remembers their time together at Derby County with fondness, and Liam Rosenior is as excellent a coach as Wayne Rooney has been and should be given the opportunity to manage Chelsea.

Liam Rosenior, the manager of Strasbourg, is the front-runner to take over as manager of Chelsea, which shares ownership with the French team.

The 41-year-old is in early negotiations with Chelsea to replace Enzo Maresca. He arrived in London on Sunday night.

After that, he moved to Strasbourg in 2024 and led Hull City before being fired, despite only missing out on the Championship play-offs.On the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney stated, “I think Liam Rosenior is as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with, so hopefully that pays off. He’s taken chances.”He’s as good as anyone I’ve dealt with in terms of attention to detail and day-to-day operations.”

Since leaving Derby, Rooney has managed DC United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle. He currently works in the media, which includes his BBC podcast.”I really valued Liam Rosenior,” Rooney remarked. “His coaching skills were amazing.” I handled players and everything more like a manager.

“So I learned a lot from him from that point of view and then I think he’s done a great job as a whole.”

According to Rooney, there are “no doubts” that Rosenior might do well for Chelsea. After eighteen months in charge of the Blues, Enzo Maresca resigned due to a disagreement with the club’s owners. Liam Rosenior last had a job in the Premier League in 2017 while playing for Brighton.

He had a respectable but unremarkable career as a right-back, playing for Fulham, Reading, and Hull in the top division. He began his coaching career in the EFL, where he spent about half of his career. Prior to Rooney, he worked with Phillip Cocu at Derby for three years after serving as Brighton’s under-23s coach.

“He’s also got a side which you don’t want to cross him as well,” Rooney remarked. That’s also crucial. He won’t let you down if he enters. He’s been waiting for this kind of chance. You will never take it if you don’t start now.

Additionally, I believe he has completed his apprenticeship and worked hard to obtain that position. He will therefore be certain that he is capable of performing that task. And I believe it’s huge for young English coaches, so hopefully we hear that he is the manager very soon.”Large clubs rarely have English managers.

Thus, he would be setting the path for us.”

Sean Dyche of Nottingham Forest, Scott Parker of Burnley, and Eddie Howe of Newcastle are the only English managers in the Premier League right now.
