Afghanistan would be especially worried about Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s performance because he had a difficult week during the just finished tri-series. and soon they have to face hong kong in there opening match of the Asia Cup 2025.
Even if an opening match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong doesn’t support that claim, this is the biggest non-ICC competition cricket has to offer in terms of spectators. However, there isn’t much bloat in a tight format, and Hong Kong has the bad luck of being placed in a group that includes three strong candidates for the trophy.
They have participated in 16 Twenty20 Internationals so far this year, but none of them have been nearly as good as the group they will face, which also includes Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They arrived in the UAE over three weeks early and scheduled four warm-up matches to acclimate to the tournament: two against local club teams and two against Oman. Their level and the task they face against the T20 World Cup semi-finalists from the previous year may be indicated by the fact that they split their matches with each opponent.

But perhaps this is the best moment for Hong Kong to take on Rashid Khan’s team. The match takes place on a turning surface in Sharjah, two days after Afghanistan’s hitters seemed completely unprepared against Pakistan’s spinners in a crushing loss in the tri-series final. Given the emotional toll of that loss and the short turnaround, Hong Kong may have a chance to surprise Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.
However, that scenario is unlikely in reality. Afghanistan is one of the top teams in these circumstances, having already defeated Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates twice. They have a batting lineup that blends destructiveness with a more traditional poise, and they have a well-rounded bowling attack. Before the tri-series final, they rotated half the team against the UAE in a dead rubber to show off their depth, yet they still prevailed. The shorter format and the timing may give Hong Kong the feeling they have a chance, but victory would still make this the greatest upset in Asia Cup history.

The Spotlight!
Rahmanullah Gurbaz defies the norm that Afghanistan’s bowlers are its most well-known players. But in the just finished tri-series, Afghanistan’s best batting star had a difficult week, collecting only 98 runs at a score of less than 110, 40 of which came in a dead rubber against the United Arab Emirates. Ibrahim Zadran and Sediqullah Atal’s outstanding consistency has helped to lessen the impact of his early dismissals, but none of them can match Gurbaz’s explosiveness while playing at his best. Afghanistan just cannot advance far without his influence, and a match against Hong Kong is the perfect chance for him to roar back to his former glory.
The same cannot be said about Zeeshan Ali and Anshuman Rath, his Hong Kong equivalents, if Afghanistan’s opener has experienced a dry spell. With strike rates that are in the mid-140s, they have proven to be both reliable and dynamic, making them Hong Kong’s two top scorers. Rath’s reliability in particular has made Hong Kong particularly reliant on his runs, but both have boasted T20I hundreds this season. He averages slightly under 50 runs a year and has scored five more half-centuries. His most notable innings was an undefeated 59-ball 100 in a thumping of Singapore. Hong Kong has to get off to a quick start, and their openers have a history of handling business in that area at least.
Team updates!
Afghanistan has preferred the additional spinner ever since they brought Noor Ahmad back into the lineup. Anticipate a squad that is comparable to the one that faced Pakistan in the championship match.
Afghanistan (perhaps): 1. Ibrahim Zadran, 2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (week), 3. Sediqullah Atal, 4. Rasooli Darwish, 5. Janat Karim, 6. Omarzai Azmatullah, 7. Captain Rashid Khan, 8. Muhammad Nabi, 9. Fazalhaq Farooqi, 10. Noor Ahmad, and 11. AM Ghazanfar
Hong Kong: 1 Anshuman Rath (possible) 2 Zeeshan Ali (week) 3 Matthew Coetzee 4 Nizakat Khan 5 Babar Hayat 6 Captain Yasim Murtaza 7 Ehsan Khan 8 Aizaz Khan 9 Ayush Shukla 10 Nasrulla Rana 11 Ateeq Iqbal

Conditions and pitch:
Abu Dhabi is thought to be a little less spin-friendly than Dubai, which could possibly lessen Afghanistan’s advantage. As is typical for the UAE at this time of year, the evening is predicted to be warm and muggy.
Stats and trivia!
Hong Kong has lost all 11 of their Asia Cup games in their 21-year history.
Afghanistan has a better T20I record in Abu Dhabi, where the game is being played, than at any other UAE stadium, having won 11 and lost 5. But in 2015, they lost their lone game versus Hong Kong here.
